Tip 2 Rumors
Provided by the Safe Schools Unit, San Diego County Office of Education

Students:

  • Don't believe rumors….they're usually lies
  • Don't start or pass a rumor, encourage friends to do the same
  • Empathize---think how you would feel if someone started a rumor about you
  • If you hear someone starts a rumor about you, don't accuse just talk with that person alone, in a non confrontational way
  • Use "I" messages…"I was hurt"
  • Rely on your self respect
  • Give respect to get respect

Parents:

  • Don't gossip, modeling is most powerful form of teaching
  • Listen to your child's dilemma---empathize, validate their feelings
  • Role play/discuss non-violent solutions ahead of time
  • Praise their positive actions

Schools:

  • Offer conflict resolution classes
