Provided by the Safe Schools Unit, San Diego County Office of Education

STUDENTS:

  • If someone talks about a gun, or you see someone with a gun, tell an adult immediately.
  • If you see a gun, never, never pick it up, tell an adult.
  • Talk to friends about dangers of guns.

PARENTS:

  • Learn this fact: Every 2 hours, someone's child is killed with a loaded gun in the US. Keep guns out of kids' hands. It's your responsibility.

  • According to American Academy of Pediatrics, the safest thing to reduce risk of gun injury is to not have a gun in your home.

  • Tell your children to never, never pick up a gun, even if it looks like a toy.

  • Talk about the dangers of guns with your children. Explain guns hurt and kill people.

  • Talk with your children about the dangers outside the home in places where they visit and play.

  • If you own a gun, always keep your gun unloaded and locked up. Lock and store bullets in a separate location. Make sure children don't have access to key.

  • Ask police for help on safe storage and gun locks.

  • Speak with parents of your children's friends to find out if they keep a gun at home. Urge them to empty it and lock it up.

  • Restrict media exposure to violence, especially in young children.

SCHOOLS:

  • Teach dangers of guns.
  • Establish confidential reporting hotline.
  • Every report of gun possession or gun use must be taken seriously.
  • Establish protocol for reports of gun possession/use.
