Tip 15 STAY ALCOHOL AND DRUG FREE
Provided by the Safe Schools Unit, San Diego County Office of Education

STUDENTS:

  • Drugs are illegal and dangerous. Understand the consequences of drug use.
  • Know there is a correlation between drug use and violence.
  • Hang out with friends who don't use drugs.
  • Tell your parents if someone offers you drugs/alcohol. Practice refusal skills.
  • Find safe and fun activities.

PARENTS:

  • Model a healthy drug free lifestyle.
  • Help your children get involved in activities they enjoy, like sports & music.
  • Never think alcohol is an "alternative" to drug use for teens, alcohol is a drug.
  • Talk with your children about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Practice refusal skills with them.
  • Get to know your children's friends and their parents.
  • Pay attention to these warning signs:
    • Change in child's behavior
    • Withdrawal
    • Drop in school attendance and grades
    • Hanging out with new friends
  • Seek professional help if your child is experiencing any of these signs.

SCHOOLS:

  • Make alcohol/drug prevention part of the curriculum.
  • Monitor drug/alcohol use on campus, support students that need help.
  • Provide healthy and safe after-school activities.
