Parents face a difficult task when teaching
children to be aware of their surroundings and potentially dangerous
situations. Try as you may, you're not ALWAYS going to be nearby,
so your kids need to learn to be responsible for their own safety.
Instruct your children to trust their intuition if a situation feels
a bit funny - and to run away immediately. Children should understand
that there is a difference between being polite and being careful;
it's okay to be "rude" by saying no to an adult that acts
suspiciously.
The best thing a child can have going for them is a protective parent
who teaches more than just the common "don't talk to strangers"
rule. Be honest with the children and explain more than just "some
people like to hurt little children." Think up scenarios and
rehearse them with your child.
